Predeal is a mountain resort town located in Brasov County, on the superior course of Timis river, at an elevation of 1020 – 1060 m, in an area with short mountains (Clăbucetele Predealului) bordered by Bucegi, Postăvaru, Piatra Mare and Baiului Mountains. It is the highest town in Romania and here one can find Prahova river embouchure. The closest major cities are Brașov, 25 km South, and Bucharest, 147 km North.
This settlement is dated a little after 1700, when several establishments were built there: a few inns (The Râșnoava River Inn, in 1700, the Poliștoaca River Inn, in 1750, and Ruja’s Inn, in 1750), a wooden hermitage (1744, burnt in a fire in 1788), and a postal service office (1790). This settlement’s first documented attestation dates since 1805. In 1852, a custom point was set there (moved there from Breaza), and in 1874, it became a rural vill (being separated from Sinaia, which comprised the villages of Predeal, Azuga, Bușteni and Poiana Țapului). In 1936, it was declared urban township. After 1918, Predeal has developed into a mountain resort and in 1952, it was declared town.
Today, it is a well-known all year round busy holiday resort, a very important touristic point, and a renowned winter sports centre with a night skiing slope on the West flank of Clăbucetul Taurului, fitted with a ski lift and a teleski connecting Clăbucet-sosire chalet, in Predeal, with the old Clăbucet-plecare chalet, situated at an elevation of 1456 m, in the Clăbucetul Taurului Massif.
The healthy mountain climate defined by the relatively low atmospheric pressure (669.1 mb/year), rich, clean, and strongly ionized air free of dust and allergen agents, the profound silence and the restful landscapes are the main natural factors recommended for the treatment of neurasthenia, and physical and mental exhaustion.
Here, summers are cool (average temperatures in July reach 150C), and winters are cold. The now blanket survives up to 100 days/ year.
Predeal resort provides a wide range of accommodations in hotels, villas and private houses, various opportunities for sports lovers, and numerous hiking trails to the nearby chalets: Trei Brazi (1128 m alt.), Clăbucet - sosire (1050 m alt.), Clăbucet - plecare (1456 m alt.), Gârbova (1350 m alt.), Susai (1350 m alt.), Piatra Mare (1630 m alt.), Poiana Secuilor (1070 m alt.), Timiș (770 m alt.), Cerbul (900 m alt.), and Pârâul Rece touristic resort (960 m alt.).
